Expanding NYC’s Tech Ecosystem
Cornell Tech in Numbers - 2022
As New York City continues its recovery from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, Cornell Tech is playing a central role in supporting the city’s tech ecosystem through educating the next generation of tech leaders, incubating new startups and advancing research in applied digital technologies. With over 900 students, faculty, staff and tenants on campus, Cornell Tech has also quickly become a vibrant and buzzing community.
Through new public events we have activated the Verizon Executive Education Center, through new
partnerships we’ve strengthened our connections to the city’s tech sector and through new programs we are directly engaging with government leaders.
This past year we hosted our 10 year anniversary with Mayor Adams and former Mayor Bloomberg on hand to help celebrate the selection of Cornell University and the Technion to become New York’s newest center of innovation. In these 10 short years, we’ve built a state-of-the-art $750 million campus on Roosevelt Island, grown from 7 students to over 500 per year and secured nearly $1billion in philanthropy to support academic and public programs.
Our impact in New York is felt well beyond the shores of Roosevelt Island. Public engagement efforts such as our K-12 Initiative are bridging the digital divide for over 5000 NYC public school students and our Break Through Tech program has doubled the number of young women in computer science at CUNY campuses across the city. And our public engagement programs are expanding. Thanks to a generous grant from the Siegel Family Foundation we’ve been able to expand our Public Interest Tech Initiative by embedding technical experts in city agencies and nonprofits.
We continue to attract world class faculty to campus, and have added three new leading researchers in 2022 with more on the way in 2023. Despite the challenge of the pandemic our student body continues to grow: our master’s program expanded more than 5% in 2022.
This past year we acquired the Tata Innovation Center in order to help expand our academic programming, research labs and to provide more space for incubating startups. This acquisition will help manage our growth while we initiate planning for the next phase of campus expansion. We are also in the planning stages for new programs including degrees in Data Science, Design and Tech, and Privacy and Security.
While we are proud of our accomplishments in 2022, we also know that there are challenge ahead. We look forward to helping grow and sustain New York’s thriving tech ecosystem
