Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
The following is a list of questions commonly asked by prospective students. For questions about LLM please contact Bonnie Klein.
What career support does Cornell Tech offer?
The Career Management team at Cornell Tech provides students with targeted services that support the realization of post-graduation career goals and build lifelong skills for successful career navigation. By partnering with career management students are able to:
- Expand understanding of the landscape of available career paths
- Maximize access to potential employers
- Prepare for recruiting and become marketable via ‘learn by doing’ activities (e.g., extensive interview practicing)
The Career Management team drives all full-time and internship recruiting operations at Cornell Tech for JCT MBAs and students in Technical programs. This encompasses all aspects of the recruiting cycle — from curating employers and events on campus to providing one on one career pathing, interview practicing, topical workshops, and resume reviews.
The Career Management team is staffed with former industry practitioners and experienced career counselors who have first-hand experience interviewing for technical and business roles. Additionally, students have access to a wide network of alumni and industry professionals for career advice, networking, and interview preparation.
The relationship with the Career Management team extends well beyond graduation for our students – the team offers support for alumni seeking to change career paths.
Does your recruiting cycle coincide with that at Cornell University in Ithaca or do you run your own recruiting cycle?
We’re a part of Cornell University and while we run our own career services, we’re aligned with the timeline and processes of the Ithaca-based schools at Cornell. In addition to attending Cornell Tech recruiting events, our students can also participate in Ithaca-based career fairs and other events.
Do Cornell Tech students have access to Cornell University’s alumni and resources in addition to Cornell Tech alumni?
Yes, being a part of Cornell University means that students have access to the alumni database and any other resource available to Ithaca-based students.
What does the on-campus recruiting process look like?
The recruiting process varies by company, its growth stage, and annual recruiting needs. In general, large and mid-sized companies that hire at scale year over year on campus, tend to conduct the majority of recruiting activities in the fall semester for full-time jobs. In the late fall through spring semester these companies shift to summer internships recruiting. Startups and smaller companies most often do ‘just in time’ hiring, usually in mid to late spring. The advantage of Cornell Tech is that we have a roster of start-up and mature companies who engage with students throughout the year, often in advance of the recruiting cycle.
What types of companies recruit on campus?
The companies that recruit at Cornell Tech represent a range of industries within and outside of the tech space. We have a balanced mix of tech and non-tech companies that come to campus and which seek to hire students from all programs. However, as most of Cornell Tech’s students tend to pursue roles in tech, we have not had the presence of investment banks/buy- or sell-side research firms or corporate finance functions that recruit for traditional investment banking or finance roles.
The Career Management team surveys incoming students to gauge their interests, which informs targeted employer outreach.
Please see the employment statistics section for examples of companies and roles secured by Cornell Tech’s graduates.
Do only tech companies recruit at Cornell Tech?
The companies that recruit at Cornell Tech represent a range of industries. Historically, most of our students pursued roles in tech, therefore, we have not had the presence of investment banks/buy- or sell-side research firms or corporate finance functions that recruit for traditional investment banking or finance roles.
